This roster of the 9th Virginia Cavalry, Company A, includes the service records of over 100 men. It is taken from the official Compiled Service Records in the National Archives. Those records suffer from omissions which will be reflected in this roster. Personal data on some of the men has also been gleaned from genealogies, local histories, descendants, cemetery records, death records and newspapers.

ANDREWS, WILTON C.: b. Jan. 18, 1844 Enl. 10/1162 in Co. B. Present Into 1864, then AWOL at last roll of record. Paroled at Bowling Green, 5/15/65. d. in Caroline Co., 2/7/1909, age 62. buried at Greenlawn Cemetery, Bowling Green.

BAKER, CECIL: Enl. 5/6/61 in Co. B, as Lt., age 20. Absent under arrest, 8/1/63 thru 10/10/63, no cause cited. KIA in Charles City Co., 6/25/64. Baker's widow Lina (m. 1860) drew a Confederate pension in 1897.  Part of his uniform is at the Museum of the Confederacy.

BAKER, EUGENE: b. Winchester, June 13, 1838. Enl. 5/6/61 in Co. B, as Sgt., age 22. Became Ordnance Sgt. for the regiment, 9/62. Promoted Captain and QM of the regiment vice Forbes, 5/12/63. Paroled 4/15/65. Sheriff of Jefferson Co. d. Leetown, W.Va., Jan. 30, 1903. Buried at Edgetown Cemetery, Charles Town, WVa

BATTAILE, JOHN: Enl. 3/6/62 in Co. B. Present steadily until sent to the hospital on 9/1/64. No further war record. Farming in Caroline Co. in 1904. Joined A. P. Hill Camp, Confederate Veterans, in Petersburg, in 1913.

BERNARD, WILLIAM ROBERTSON: b. 12/17/1825. Farmer. Enl. 11/17/61 in Co. B. Discharged by order of the Secretary of War, 8/1/63. Died at Gaymont, Caroline Co., 4/13/1881, and buried there.

BOULWARE, GRAY: Enl. 3/10/62 in Co. B. No further record. d. 2/14/1895 in Topeka, Kansas, age 72.

BOULWARE, JAMES ELLIOTT: b. 1/23/1832. m. Caroline Broaddus. Enl. 5/6/61 in Co. B, as Lt. Detailed as Commissary for the regiment, 11/1/63. Present on all rolls until the final one (9/30/64), when he was absent on leave. POW in Louisa Co., 5/2/63; paroled May 18th. POW on 12/12/64 at Stony Creek; released 6/17/65. Farmer. d. 3/14/1915 in Caroline. bur. Greenlawn Cemetery, Bowling Green. Boulware's photograph appears in the recent pictorial history of Caroline Co., by Haley (page 20) (Boulware normally did not use either his middle name or its initial.)

BOULWARE, MUSCOE: Physician. Enl. 3/14/62 in Co. B. Present in the ranks until detailed as surgeon for the division's hospital, 5/63 thru 12/63. Present with Co. B again, 1/64 thru 4/64. Absent sick later in 1864. Paroled at Bowling Green, 5/8/65. Practicing medicine in Mississippi in 1885. Died before 1904.

BOULWARE, WILLIAM: Enl. 4/10/64 in Co. B. KIA on 10/27/64.  

BOUTWELL, APOLLOS: b. Oct. 15, 1827 Enl. 5/6/61, age 33. Absent sick, 9/62 thru 5/63 and again in June and Sept 1864 Paroled at Bowling Green, 5/13/65. Farmer in Caroline Co. in 1904. d. Nov. 17, 1917, bur. Enon Baptist Church, Essex Co.

BRANHAM, JOHN H.: Enl. 8/10/63 in Co. B. Detailed on the day of enlistment as forage agent for Major Dade. Stayed on that detail to the last roll. Paroled at Charlottesville, 5/18/65.  

BROADDUS, ARCHIBALD THOMAS: Farmer. Discharged from Co. H, 30th Virginia Infantry, on 7/10/62, age 20. Enl. Co. B, 9th Cavalry, on 3/15/63. Absent sick in 7/8/63, 6/64and 9/64. Paroled at Appomattox. Operated a sawmill in Hanover in 1885.

BROADDUS, ALEXANDER WOODFORD: b. March 2, 1844 in Caroline Co. m. Sallie M. Haile, 1859 Enl. 3/22/63 in Co. B. Absent sick in 4/63, 4/64 and 7-8/64. AWOL at 9/30/64 final roll. Farmer in Caroline Co. in 1904.  A brother of Henry O.  Served in the 55th Virginia Infantry, 1861 - 1862 d. Sept. 13, 1920. bur. Shiloh Church near Gether, Caroline Co.

BROADDUS, EUGENE LEONIDAS: b. 1840 in Caroline Co. Enl. 5/6/61 in Co. B. Absent sick, 7/61 thru 12/61. Surprised while asleep at the home of a friend in Caroline (Dr. Gouldin), and killed, early in 1862. This man's identity is somewhat clouded by the fact that there is a tombstone at Salem Church in Sparta (about the right locale) with the matching death year but divergent middle name and birth: Eugene Liewellyn, 1830 - 1862

BROADDUS, SILAS B.: Enl. 5/6/61 in Co. B, age 22. Detailed as courier for Genl. French, 9/61 thru 12/61. Detailed in Brigade Ordnance Department, 12/10/63 thru 9/30/64 final roll. Died before 1885.

BROOKS, ROBERT L.: Enl. 2/1/64 in Co. B. Absent sick for all but two months of his recorded service thru 9/30/64 final roll. Paroled at Bowling Green, 5/8/65. Farming in Caroline Co. in 1885. d. 5/23/1916 in Caroline, age 72.

BUCKNER, RICHARD HENRY WILLIAM: b. Oct. 24, 1845 Enl. 6/3/63 in Co. B, and was killed six days later at Brandy Station. bur. Greenlawn Cemetery, Bowling Green.

BURKE, GEORGE WASHINGTON: b. 1823. Enl. 3/3/62 in Co. B. Absent sick in June 1862, then no further record. d. 7/28/1896 in Caroline.

BURKE, JOHN WILLIAM: b. 1/11/1847. Enl. 6/25/64 in Co. B. Present at 9/30/64 final roll. Essex Co. farmer. d. 5/20/1899, Buried in an unmarked grave near Massaponax on the west side of Rt. 1.

BURKE, THOMA5 H.: Enl. 5/7/62 in Co. B. Detailed for duty by Fitzhugh Lee on 8/25/62. Transferred to Co. G, 4th Virginia Cavalry, 12/10/62. Died before 1885.

BURRUSS, JOHN GEORGE: b. Jan. 1837. Enl. 5/6/61 in Co. B. Farmer. Absent sick, 10/61 to 12/61, 10/63to 12/63, 6/64 and 9/64 to 11/64. Paroled at Ashland, 5/2/65. Farming in Caroline Co. in 1904. d. March 1920 in Richmond.

CALLISS, RICHARD F.: Enl. 9/22/61 in Co. B, age 25. Present at every roll thru 9/30/64 final roll. Informal records state that he was killed at Five Forks.

CALLISS, WALTER SCOTT: b. 1/3/1840. Enl. 5/6/61 in Co. B. Absent wded. during June 1864. Admitted to Chimborazo Hospital on 10/2/64 with gunshot wound in the back. Paroled at Bowling Green, 5/6/65. Farmer in Caroline Co. D. 6/13/1895 in Alexandria.

CAMPBELL, CORNELIUS R.D.: Enl. 5/6/61, age 20, in Co. B. Transferred to 10th Va. Cav. on 1/3/63. Farmer in Caroline Co. in 1885. Died before 1904.  

CAMPBELL, FELIX WINSTON: b. March 26, 1833. Brother of French and Cornelius. of the 9th Cavalry and James and John of the 30th Virginia Infantry. Enl. 5/6/61 in Co. B, age 25. Absent detailed at most rolls from 9/61 thru 2/63, first as carpenter then in QM duty with the regiment. Shown as transferring to Co. E, 9th Cav., in 2/63, but no further record thereafter. d. 11/16/1907 in Caroline, age 77.

CAMPBELL, FRENCH DULANEY: b. 1830. m. Judy Saunders, 1853. Enl.3/10/62 in Co. B. Transferred to Henry's Battery Horse Artillery, 12/24/62.  Later served in the 24th Virginia Cavalry. Farming in Caroline Co. in 1885. d. Oct. 1902.

CAMPBELL, MANASSEH: b. April 22, 1828. m. Emma Hasaltine Allen. Enl. 3/2/62 in Co. B. Present always thru 8/64 final roll. Farmer at "Poplar Grove" near Ladysmith in Caroline Co. Father of seven children. Alive in 1910.

CARNEAL, LAFAYETTE J.: Enl. 10/1/62 in Co. B. Present without exception until absent sick at 9/30/64 final roll. At Chimborazo Hospital on 2/22/65. Paroled at Ashland, 4/26/65. Richmond merchant in 1885. Died before 1904.  

CARTER, LUTHER ALEXANDER: b. 6/11/1844. Enl. 9/1/62 in Co. B. Transferred to Caroline Light Artillery on 8/31/63. Farmer. d. 4/29/1908 in Upper Zion, Caroline Co.

CASH, DAVID SAMPLE: Enl. 5/18/61 in Co. B, age 23. Detailed as carpenter, 9/12/61. Absent sick, 5/6/62. Present then thru 9/30/64 final roll. Paroled at Appomattox. Farmer in Caroline Co. in 1885. d. 5/4/1911, age 80.

CASH, WALTER S.: Enl. 6/10/61 in Co. B, age 22. Detailed as carpenter, 9/12/61. Absent sick in 1861 and 1862, and 10/11/63 thru 9/30/64 final roll (the last four months without leave). Two unofficial sources say that Cash was killed during the war.

CHANDLER, HENRY H.: b. 2/14/1837. Enl. 5/7/61 in Co. B. Present thru 2/62, then no further record. Later served in Co. F, Mosby's Cav. Battalion. Farmer in Louisa Co. in 1885. Alive in 1904.  

CHANDLER, RICHARD W.: Enl. 10/1/62 in Co. B. Wded. in arm at Brandy Station, 6/9/63. Wded. at Gettysburg. Never returned to the regiment; assigned to light duty in Caroline Co. Farmer in N.C. in 1885.

CHANDLER, SAMUEL TEMPLE: Enl. 5/6/61 in Co. B, age 23. Promoted to Cpl., 8/1/61 and to Sgt. in May 1862. Wded. by a bad saber cut at Brandy Station, 6/9/63. POW in King & Queen Co., 3/10/64; exchanged 2/15/65. Paroled at Richmond, 4/20/65. Farmer in Maryland in 1885. Died before 1904.

CHANDLER, THOMAS KAY: b. 9/11/1830. Enl. 3/10/62 in Co. B. Absent on detailed service with Joseph Reid Anderson, May 1862 thru April 1863. No further record. d. 12/21/1919. bur. Fredericksburg Confederate Cemetery.  

CHANDLER, WILLIAM SAMUEL: b. 10/3/1826. Served in 1861 in the 55th Virginia Infantry.  Brother of Henry H. and Thomas K. Chandler of the 9th Cavalry. Enl. 3/10/62 in Co. B. Absent wded., May-June 1864. Wded. again, gunshot in right thigh, ca. 10/1/64; still hospitalized in March 1865. POW at Amelia Cross Roads,4/3/65; released 6/14/65. Died before 1904.

CHANDLER, WILLIAM TIMOTHY: b. May 17, 1832. m. Alice Scott. Caroline Co. lawyer. Capt. of the Tyranny Unmasked Artillery in 1861, but dropped at its reorganization. Enl. 5/27/62 in Co. B. Detailed to C.S. Signal Corps in Sept. 1862 and stayed there the whole war. Gunshot in knee, 5/22/64. Paroled at Ashland, 5/3/65, with the rank of Sgt. in the Signal Corps. Practicing law in Caroline in 1885. d. 3/17/1903 at Guiney's Station.

CHAPMAN, WALTER F.: Enl. 3/10/62 in Co. B. Present until POW at Hanover, 6/30/63; paroled 3/3/64. POW at Beaver Dam Station, 5/9/64; released 6/14/65.  

CHEWNING, AURELIUS GARLAND: b. Caroline Co., 10/23/1847  His only official record is of parole at Ashland, 4/26/65. Merchant in Roanoke. d. May 1911 in Roanoke.

CLARK, JAMES A.: Conscript assigned to Co. B on 4/16/64, age 22. Occupation - nail cutter. Wded. in left hand on 5/10/64, two fingers amputated. Clark stayed at Chimborazo Hospital there after and as late as Feb. 1865 was a convalescent doing guard duty there.

COLEMAN, ROBERT: Enl. 5/6/61 in Co. B. Student. Transferred to Co. E, 30th Va. Inf. on 7/30/61. d. 6/25/1916 in Soldiers' Home at Richmond, age 76.

COLEMAN, JAMES L.: Physician prewar. Enl. 3/2/62 in Co. B. Absent sick, Sept.-Dec. 1862. Wded. 8/16/64, leg amputated. Merchant in Bowling Green in 1885. Died before 1904.  

COLLAWN, JOHN WALTER SCOTT: Enl. 1/15/63 in Co. B. Present always thru 9/30/64 final roll. Paroled at Bowling Green, 5/5/65. Patient in asylum in 1885.

COLLINS, GEORGE R.: The only record of this man is of his parole at Ashland on 4/28/65.

COLLINS, JAMES CLAYTON: b. 7/20/1836. Enl. 5/8/61 in Co. B. Absent sick once, otherwise always present thru 9/30/64 final roll. Paroled at Ashland, 4/26/65. d. 9/2/1872 in Prairieville, Alabama.

COLLINS, JOSEPH TODD: Enl. 5/6/61 in Co. B as Sgt., age 25. Farmer. Detailed as brigade sutler by W.H.F. Lee on 1/16/63. On 5/1/64, Collins transferred back into this company from the 10th Va. Cav., with the rank of private. Paroled at Ashland, 4/29/65. Merchant in Alabama after the war.  

CONWAY, AYLETT HAWES: b. 7/2/1824. Enl, 5/18/61 in Co. B. Detailed as courier to Genl. Holmes, July 1861 thru Dec.1862. Detailed as hospital steward in Richmond, Jan. 1863 thru 9/30/64 final roll. (Thus, he never actually served with his company in the field.) Fredericksburg merchant after the war. d. 1/27/1892 in Newport News.

CONWAY, CATLETT: Enl. 8/7/61 in Co. B. Detailed to hospital duty in Richmond from May 1862 thru 9/30/64 final roll. Paroled at Appomattox.

CONWAY, PATRICK HENRY: b. 3/17/1847. Enl. 11/1/63 in Co. B, as substitute for one W. Robinson, of Richmond. Absent sick, Dec. 1863 thru March 1864 and again Sept. 1864 thru Nov. 1864. Transferred to Co. I, 10th Va. Cav., 12/6/64. Farmer in Fairfax Co. d. 4/22/1906 in Stafford.  

CORBIN, RICHARD: b. King & Queen Co., 12/1/1833. att. U.Va. Owned Moss Neck plantation. Father of Janie Corbin (d.1863) who was so much loved by Stonewall Jackson. Enl. 5/6/61 in Co. B. POW at unknown date, paroled 9/7/62. KIA near Culpeper C.H., 9/13163.

CRUTCHFIELD, GILMER: Enl. 6/21/63 in Co. B. Wded. at Gettysburg; returned to duty in Jan. 1864. Present until AWOL at 9/30/64 final roll. Died before 1904.

CULLEN, WILLIAM P.: Enl. 5/21/61 in Co. B, age 36. Detailed to procure forage and teams, Sept. 1861 thru Dec. 1862. Finally dropped on the Dec. 1862 roll. Living in St. Louis in 1886.

CUNNINGHAM, W.D.: Richmond hospital records show him as a member of Co. B, hospitalized in Nov.-Dec. 1864. No further record.

DADE, HENRY F.: Enl. 8/10/63 in Co. B. Merchant. Immediately detailed as clerk to Maj. A.G. Dade and remained in that role through the war. Paroled at Beaver Dam on 5/10/65.

DICKINSON, JAMES C.: Enl. 5/7/61 in Co. B. Age 23 in April 1862. Absent sick, July-Dec. 1861 and Dec. 1862 March 1863.  AWOL, May June 1862. Detailed by Genl. Stuart to run a seine fishery on the Rappahannock, March June 1863. Present then until transferred to Co. E, 11th Va. Cav. on 4/25/64. Farmer in Spotsylvania Co. in 1885. d. 1/10/1901 in Caroline. age 63.

DICKINSON, WILLIAM B.: Served in Fredericksburg Arty. in 1861. Enl. 6/18/62 in Co. B, 9th Cav. Returned to Fredericksburg Arty. on 10/10/63. Farmer in Spotsylvania. d. 12/31/1912.  

DIGGS, WILLIAM C.: Enl. 1/23/63 in Co. B. Absent wded. from March 1864 thru 9/30/64 final roll. In Chimborazo Hosp. with eczema and scabies on 3/28/65. Paroled at Bowling Green, 5/3/65. Merchant in Caroline Co., 1885.d. 1/31/1918, age 73.

EDWARDS, JOHN T.: Enl 9/1/63 in Co. B. Present on all rolls thru 9/30/64 final roll. Informal records show that he died in hospital.

ENGLAND, JOHN W.: Enl. 9/19/62 in Co. B. Farmer. Absent sick in Aug. 1863. Always present otherwise thru 9/30/64 final roll. Paroled at Ashland, 5/1/65. Farmer in Caroline Co. in 1904.  Caroline Co. census for 1910 shows him as a widower, age 70.  Alive in 1920 and drawing a pension in Caroline Co.

FARISH, CHARLES H.: Enl. 5/6/61 in Co. B. Age 23 in April 1862. Absent sick, July-Oct. 1861 and March-April 1864. Died of dysentery in Petersburg hospital, 7/23/64.

FARISH, CHARLES W.: Enl. 5/6/61 in Co. B, Age 20 in April 1862. Promoted to Cpl., ca. March 1863. Wded. in Md., 7/8/63. KIA at Brandy Station, 10/11/63.

FARISH, JOSEPH T.: Enl. 6/3/63 in Co. B. Wounded just six days later at Brandy Station, leg amputated. Retired to Invalid Corps, 12/13/64. Paroled at Bowling Green, 5/17/65.  Pension application dated April 1888 gives his age at 44.  d. Aug. 3, 1889 in Caroline Co.

FARISH, KEELING R.: Enl. 5/6/61 in Co. B. Age 22 in March 1862. POW in Caroline Co., 4/25/62; exchanged 7/5/62. Absent detailed with wounded brother, June 1863. Detailed with Maj. Waite in brigade QM, 10/27/63 thru 9/30/64 final roll. Paroled at Bowling Green, 5/3/65. Commissioner of Revenue for Caroline Co. d. 2/6/1911, age 73.

FARISH, THOMAS F.: Enl. 3/6/62 in Co. B. Present on every roll thru 9/30/64 final roll. Paroled at Appomattox with the rank of corporal.

FARISH, WILLIAM DUVAL: Enl. 6/6/61 in Co. B, age 18. Farmer. Discharged for disability, 5/21/62. Re-enlisted, 3/5/63. Wded. at Brandy Station, 6/9/63. Absent sick for four months during 1863-64. Present at 9/30/64 final roll. d. 6/7/1914 in Temple, Texas.

FARISH, WILLIAM P.T.: b. 11/15/1838. Enl. 5/6/61 in Co. B. Absent sick, July-Dec. 1861. Shown as transferred to Co. F on 2/28/63, but from that point there is no further record until Farish was captured on 4/3/65 at Southside Railroad (shown as of Co. B); released from Pt. Lookout, 6/12/65.

TAYLOR, ROBERT INNES: b. 5/24/1846. Enl 4/1/64 in Co. B. Had horse killed at Spotsylvania, 5/12/64. Wded. by gunshot in chest on 8/25/64, and absent thereafter. Taylor was in Chimborazo Hosp. on 3/10/65, suffering from gunshot in the lung - probably still the same wound. Farmer at "Fall Hill" near Fredericksburg, where he died 5/31/1925.  Bur. Fredericksburg City Cemetery.

TEMPLE, BENJAMIN BROOKE: b. 3/22/1839. att. U.Va. Physician. Transferred to Co. B from 2nd Co., Richmond Howitzers. Absent detailed as scout, Nov.-Dec. 1863. Present at 9/30/64 final roll. d. 3/11/1906 in Danville.

TEMPLE, CHARLES WELLFORD: b. Jan. 10, 1834. Enl. 6/30/61 in Co. B.  Absent detailed as clerk from 1861 clear through Feb. 1864, mostly with Genl. Field.  Promoted to Lieutenant of ordnance about Feb. 1864, and served as such in N.C. and Southwest Va.  POW in March 1862; released on parole 9/27/62.  Teacher.  d. April 25, 1899.  bur. Fredericksburg City Cemetery.  Virginia Historical Society has Temple’s papers.

TEMPLE, LUDWELL ROBINSON: b. 1846  Belonged to Co. B, late in 1864. Surgeon Randolph reported Temple as very young and feeble, and he was detailed to light duty on 11/24/64.  d. 1876.

TEMPLE, WILLIAM SKYREN: Transferred to Co. B on 1/28/63 from Purcell Arty. Absent on detailed duty, March-April and Sept.-Dec. 1863. Absent sick, May-Aug. 1864. Present at 9/30/64 final roll. POW at Sutherland Station, 4/2/65; released 6/20/65. Merchant. d. Jan. 1904 in New York, age 64.

TERRELL, JOHN MICOU: Originally served in 30th Va. Inf. as Lt. Enl. 9/1/63 in Co. B. On detached duty, Nov.-Dec. 1863 Wded., 8/16/64, left leg amputated, ending field service. Paroled at Bowling Green, 5/16/65. Farming in Essex Co.. 1885. Sheriff of Essex Co. for 30 years. d. 3/31/1922 in Ashland, age 79.

THOMAS, JOSEPH W.: b. 1837. Enl. 5/6/61 in Co. B. Absent sick, Sept.-Oct. 1862. Present on all other rolls thru 9/30/64 final roll. Paroled at Richmond, 4/21/65. Contractor and city councilman in Richmond. d. 9/14/1915.

THOMAS, ROBERT N.: Enl. 2/27/62 in Co. B. Absent sick, March-June 1863and March-April 1864. Present at 9/30/64 final roll. Wded. 4/6/65. Paroled at Farmville, April 11-21, 1865. Living in Carolina Co. in 1904.  In a pension application dated June 1900 Thomas gave his age as 69.

TODD, GEORGE T.: Enl  5/6/61 in Co. B. Absent sick on every roll until discharged for disability, 5/11/62, age 26. Occupation - farmer. Unofficial records state that Todd died in hospital.
