This roster of the 9th Virginia Cavalry, Company A, includes the service records of over 100 men. It is taken from the official Compiled Service Records in the National Archives. Those records suffer from omissions which will be reflected in this roster. Personal data on some of the men has also been gleaned from genealogies, local histories, descendants, cemetery records, death records and newspapers.

BATTAILE, WILLIAM T. EUGENE: Enl. 4/11/64 in Co. C. Hospitalized in Richmond on 10/29/64 for a shell wound in the side.  Deserted from the hospital on 11/21/64. Paroled at Westmoreland C.H., 5/5/65.

BEALE, ALBERT S.: Enl. 5/25/61 in Co. C. Present until 1/64, when he was "detailed to assist Capt. Baker in the Northern Neck." No further record.

BEALE, BUSHROD B.: Enl. 5/25/61 in Co. C. Always present thru 10/1/64 final roll.

BEALE. GEORGE WILLIAM: b. 8/21/1842. Enl. 5/25/61 in Co. C, as Sgt. To Lt. on 12/9/62. Absent sick, 4/64 to 5/64 Wounded in left thigh on 2/6/65. Baptist preacher after the war and author of many war writings. d. 7/15/1921.

BEALE, RICHARD CHANNING: b. 5/30/1846. Transferred to Co. C. on 8/28/61, from Brockenbrough's Battery (Va.). Detailed to serve as orderly to Col. Beale (his father) on 10/17/62; still shown as so detailed at 10/1/64 final roll. POW in Westmoreland Co., 2/14/63. Became a judge in Texas and died in Corsicana, 6/9/1889.

BEALE, RICHARD LEE TURBERVILLE: b. 5/22/1819. att. U.Va. Enl. 5/25/61 in Co. C, as Lt. Elected Capt., 7/5/61, vice T.S. Garnett who was promoted. To Major – 11/61. Elected Lt. Col., 4/29/62. Promoted Colonel, to rank from 9/15/62, but dated 9/16/64, accepted 10/22/64 and confirmed 1/5/65. Appointed Brigadier General, 1/6/65. Meanwhile, he had been wded. and admitted to hospital as a result on 9/17/63. Paroled at Ashland, 4/27/65. Served in the Virginia Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives. d. Hague, 4/21/1893.

BEALE, ROBERT: Enl. 5/25/61 in Co. C. To Sgt. - 11/61. Reduced to the ranks as a private, early in 1862. AWOL, 3/25/63 thru 11/1/63. Detailed on QM duty on Northern Neck, 11/63 until discharged on 6/1/64.

BEALE, ROBERT HUNTER: b. 7/6/44. Enl. 8/26/62 in Co. C. Detailed as an orderly to Col. Beale (his father) on 10/17/62,and shown on that detail thru the 1/19/65 final roll. Lawyer and judge in Westmoreland Co. d. 10/27/1905.

BENSON, HENRY CLAY: Enl. 7/15/63 in Co. C, after having served in Co. I, 4th Virginia Cavalry, in 1861. Detailed to ordnance duty in Richmond in 1864, and still serving there in 3/65. Died in Gurley, Ala., 1/1/1891.

BOWIE, GORDON F.: Enl. 5/25/61 in Co. C, as Cpl. To Sgt. on 11/18/63. Wded. in the chest, 8/16/64. Paroled at Westmoreland C.H., 5/6/65. Alive in 1897 in Richmond Co.

BOWIE, WALTER: b. 11/11/1843. gr. VMI. Private in 11th Virginia Infantry in 1861, then served briefly on the staff at VMI. Enl. Co. C, 9th Cavalry, on 7/14/62. Absent wounded, 10/62. Transferred to C.S. Navy as Midshipman, 3/1/63. Later served with Mosby. Merchant and chemist d. Nashville, Tenn., 12/23/1909. Prof. at VMI postwar.

BRANSON, BENJAMIN H.: Conscript assigned to Co. C, 6/3/64. Received an accidental wound that had him at home at 8/64 final roll.

BRANSON, JOHN W.: Enl. 5/25/61 in Co. C, as Cpl. To Sgt. on 7/20/61. Reduced to the ranks in 11/61, then back again to Sgt., 12/9/62.  Wded and POW on 8/11/64. Taken prisoner well after the war for some reason on 5/12/65 in Westmoreland Co.; released in D.C. on 6/3/65.

BROOKS. HORACE A.: Physician. Enl. 5/25/61 in Co. C. Absent on leave, 5/62 thru 8/62. No further official records, but unofficial source says he was taken prisoner and sent to Ft. McHenry in 8/62.

BROWN BUSHROD B.: Enl. 5/25/61 in Co. C. Present at every roll until mortally wounded at Nance’s Shop, 6/24/64. Died at Chimborazo Hospital, 8/22/64.

BROWN, EDWIN D.: Enl. 7/24/61 in Co. C. Wounded in right leg, 7/1/63  Discharged as a result of the wound on 1/18/65, without having returned to duty.

BROWN, JOHN NEWTON: Enl. 5/25/61 in Co. C.  Wded about 5/1/63 sent to hospital in Charlottesville on May 2.  Present on every roll thru 1/19/65 final roll. Paroled at Westmoreland C.H. 5/24/65. Informal records say he was killed on 10/27/64

CARTER, J.W.: Enl. 6/13/64 in Co. C. Shown as transferred to Co. F. 30th Va. Inf. on 11/24/64, but the records of that regiment do not show him at all.

CHANDLER, RICHARD M.: Conscript assigned to Co. C, 6/13/64. Present thru 1/19/65 final roll. Paroled at Westmoreland C.H., 5/5/65.

CLAYBROOK, EDWIN COKE: b. Northumberland Co., 1842. Enl. 5/25/61 in Co. C. Present until POW at Gettysburg, 7/3/63; released 12/30/63 at Ft. Delaware, having taken the oath. Returned to duty in May 1864 and present thence thru 1/19/65 final roll.  POW at Aberdeen Run, 4/3/65; released from Pt. Lookout, 6/10/65. d. 7/14/1893 in Westmoreland Co. bur. Yeocomico Church.

COOMBS, JOHN F.: Enl. 1/27/62 in Co. C. AWOL from 12/11/62. No further record.

CRABBE, TASKIER CARTER: b. 2/15/1844. Enl. 12/24/62 in Co. C. Present on every single roll thru 10/1/64 final roll. Paroled on Northern Neck, 5/9/65.

CRASK, SELDON F.: Enl. 6/4/61 in Co. C. Absent sick, July‑Oct. 1862 and May-June 1863. AWOL twice in 1863 and "Deserted about Feb. 25th 1864." d. 6/20/1893. bur. Loudoun Park, Baltimore.

CRITCHER, JOHN: b. 3/11/1820. gr. U.Va. Enl. 5/25/61 in Co. C. Promoted to Cpl. on 7/20/61 and to Sgt. ca. Nov 1861. Critcher became Lt. Col. of the 15th Va. Cav. at the reorganizations in early 1862. Member of the U.S. Congress after the war. d. 9/27/1901.

EVERETT, CHARLES W.: Enl. 5/25/61 in Co. C. Illiterate. Did extra duty as a wagon driver. Deserted to U.S. lines near Falmouth on 3/30/63.

GARNETT, THOMAS STUART: b. 4/19/1825. Physician. Commissioned on 5/25/61 as Capt. of Co. C, but held the office only very briefly if at all as he went on to become Col., 48th Va. Inf. Mortally wounded at Chancellorsville.

GEORGE, PHILANDER CHINN: Enl. 5/25/61 in Co. C. Detailed as ambulance driver, 4/25/62 thru Jan. 1864. Absent on leave, Jan - Feb 1864 then present thru 10/1/64 final roll. POW at Amelia C.H.; released from Pt. Lookout, 6/12/65. d. July 1899.

GOULDIN, CHESTER F.: Enl. 1/3/62 in Co. C. Present until KIA at Reams Station, 8/25/64.

GREGORY, JOSEPH RODGER: Enl. 5/25/61 in Co. C. Illiterate. Absent on detached service in Winchester, May-Oct. 1862 Detailed as an orderly to Col. Beale, 12/15/62 thru Aug. 1863. GUTRIDGE, GEORGE C.: Enl. 7/18/61 in Co. C. "Tried by court martial for desertion & returned to Camp 16th Aug. Acquitted sentence being disapproved." Shown again as having deserted on 4/23/62. but present on duty in Sept. 1862.  Wded. (gunshot in right knee and chest) and POW at Upperville, 6/21/63; paroled 8/24/63. Absent due to the wound for the rest of the war.  Living in Westmoreland Co. in 1910, a 66 year old laborer.

GUTRIDGE, WILLIAM OCTAVUS: Enl. 5/25/61 in Co. C, "Tried by court martial for desertion returned to camp 16th Aug. Acquitted sentence being disapproved.”  Present then until KIA at Centreville, 8/28/62

HAISLIP, JOSEPH B., Enl. 5/25/61 in Co. C. Present thru March 1862, then there is a large gap without any records. At 10/1/64 Haislip was present, but "Has been absent without leave." Paroled at Westmoreland C.H., 5/5/65.

HALL, JAMES CLAUGHTON: Enl. 2/l/64 in Co. C. Reported as being a deserter in Westmoreland Co. in March. POW at Amelia C.H., 4/3/65; released from Pt. Lookout, 6/14/65.

HALL, LUTHER F.: Enl. 5/25/61 in Co. C. Present until drowned, 8/8/62.

HALL, SHELDON M. : Enl. 5/25/61 in Co. C. Farmer. Deserted on 8/5/62, but was returned to duty on 1/15/63. "Missing" during May – June 1863. AWOL in Westmoreland Co., Nov. 1863 thru Feb. 1864. Discharged for disability, 12/16/64, age 35.

HARDICK, HENRY: Member of Co. C. Only record is of his capture on 5/12/65 in Westmoreland Co.; he was released on 6/28/65 from Old Capitol Prison. It is possible he was snared in the frenzy after John Wilkes Booth was killed.

HARDWICK, STEPHEN C.: Enl. 5/25/61 in Co. C.  Promoted to Cpl., 7/20/61 and to Sgt., 5/9/62. Present on all rolls until mortally wounded at Nance’s Shop 6/24/64; died at Chimborazo Hosp., 8/18/64.

HARVEY, JOHN WASHINGTON: b. 2/11/1846. Conscript assigned to Co. C, 6/10/64.  Wded. by gunshot in left leg, 7/29/64; absent from this wound until at least Oct. Paroled at Westmoreland C.H., 5/5/65. d. 4/29/1920. bur. St. James Episcopal Church, Montross.

HARVEY, MUNGO P.: Enl. 5/25/61 in Co. C. Promoted to Cpl., ca. Sept. 1861, and to Sgt., 11/26/61. Returned to Pvt. in April 1862. Detailed as acting Ordnance Sgt. from 6/10/63 thru 10/1/64 final roll. Paroled at King George C.H., 5/2/65.

HOLLIDAY, JAMES R.: Enl. 5/25/61 in Co. C, as Sgt. Reduced to Pvt., 7/20/61. Absent sick, May-Oct. 1862 and Sept. 1863 thru Jan. 1864. Present at 10/1/64 final roll. Hospitalized on 3/5/65 in Richmond with incised wound of left leg. POW at Dinwiddie C.H., 3/29/65; released from Pt. Lookout, 6/13/65.

HUNTER, RICHARD T.: Enl. 4/14/64 in Co. C Mortally wounded by gunshot in left leg at Malvern Hill 7/27/64 died in Richmond, 8/11/64.

HUTT, STEPTOE D.: Lived in Alabama early in his life. m. Nancy Moxley in 1836. Enl. 5/25/61 in Co. C. Released from service "on account of age and physical disability," 8/19/61.

JENKINS, JAMES P.: b. 1/16/1840. Enl. 12/19/61 in Co. C. Absent sick, July-Aug. 1862. Present on every other muster roll thru 10/1/64 final roll. Paroled at Westmoreland C.H., 5/5/65. d. 12/26/1905. bur. St. James Church, Montross.

JETT, CHARLES W.: Enl. 4/10/62 in Co. C. Absent sick, July-Aug. 1862 Mortally wounded at Brandy Station 6/9/63 and died three days later.

JETT, EDWIN W.: Enl. 5/25/61 in Co. C, as musician. Appointed Chief Bugler, 8/1/62. Wounded at Brandy Station, 6/9/63. Present on every muster roll thru 1/19/65 final roll. Paroled at Ashland, 4/28/65.

JETT, LUCIUS LELAND: Enl. 6/14/61 in Co. C. Absent on detached service, July-Aug. 1862. Discharged for disability, 1/12/63, age 20. Occupation - student. Living in Lancaster Co. in 1871.

JETT, THOMAS WILLIAM: b. 1843 in Westmoreland Co. Clerk. Enl. 10/25/61 in Co. C. Present until wded. at Brandy Station Returned to duty in Feb. 1864. Present then thru 1/1965 final roll. d. 2/1/1916 in Northumberland Co., age 73.

JETT, WILLIAM STORKE: b. 12/2/1846. Enl. 6/16/64 in Co. C. Severely wded. on 6/29/64. fighting the Wilson raiders, by a gunshot wound in the abdomen. The ball lodged in his intestines and he was kept off duty to the end of the war. As a result of contact with the fleeing John Wilkes Booth (whether the contact was innocent or not remains under debate), Jett was arrested in Westmoreland Co. on 5/1/65; he was released from Old Capitol Prison on 5/31/65. d. 7/17/1884 of apoplexy in Williamsburg. bur. Fredericksburg Confederate Cem.

JOHNSON, JAMES W.: Transferred to Co. C on 3/18/63. Present on every roll thru 10/1/64 final roll.

JOHNSON, PHILLIP D.: Conscript assigned to Co. C, 6/13/64. Present thru 1/19/65 final roll. Paroled at Westmoreland C.H., 5/5/65.

LAWRENCE, RODERICK S.: Enl. 5/25/61 in Co. C, as Sgt. Reduced to Pvt. at his own request on 7/20/61. Detailed to C.S. Signal Corps. 6/20/62. Remained on that detail thru 10/1/64 final roll. Meanwhile, he had been in wounded in Fredericksburg on 4/18/62, and was taken prisoner in Westmoreland Co., 2/14/63 (exchanged from Old Capitol Prison, 3/29/63).

LEFEVRE, JOHN: Conscript assigned to Co. C, 6/10/64. Present thru 10/1/64 final roll. Paroled at Northumberland C.H., 5/8/65.

LEWIS, ROBERT BYRD: b. 1842. att. William & Mary. Great-great-grandson of the famous couple, Fielding and Betty Washington Lewis. Served in the Fredericksburg Arty in 1861. Enl. 4/16/62 in Co. WALKER, WILLIAM MIDDLETON: b. Feb. 12, 1845.  While serving with the 40th Va. Inf. Walker was wounded at Frazier’s Farm, 6/30/62.  His infantry records show he was moved to Co. C. 9th Cav. There is a record of his being admitted to Petersburg hospital on 10/26/64 with gunshot wound of groin and both thighs.  d. April 24, 1882  Walker is buried in a family cemetery near Oldhams.
