This roster of the 9th Virginia Cavalry, Company E, includes the service records of over 100 men. It is taken from the official Compiled Service Records in the National Archives. Those records suffer from omissions which will be reflected in this roster. Personal data on some of the men has also been gleaned from genealogies, local histories, descendants, cemetery records, death records and newspapers.

ARMSTRONG, MAHLON: Enl. 4/25/61 in Co. E. Deserted on 4/18/62. d. 2/6/1918 in Richmond, age 80.

ASHTON, LEWIS ALEXANDER: b. 1833. Enl. 3/1/62 in Co. E. Present until discharged for disability on 4/27/63, age 29. Farmer. Discharge was "because of injury to the spine received during Stuart's raid around McClellan's Army." d. 1893.

BALLARD, CAMDEN B.: Enl. 9/7/64 in Co. E. Student. Discharged for disability, 2/4/65, age 21.

BARTON, GREEN H.: Enl. 9/15/62 in Co. E. Wded. in arm and POW at Bailey's Cross Roads. 11/5/62; exchanged 12/1/62. Returned from wounded furlough in 5/63. Private manuscripts show him as having been killed at Mine Run, 11/63.

BEAZLEY, JAMES A.: Enl. 4/25/61 in Co. E. Present on all rolls until mortally wounded at Boonsboro on 9/15/62 and died two days later.

BEVERLEY, FRANCIS CORBIN: b. 11/21/1820. Enl. 4/25/61 in Co. E, as Captain. Resigned 8/25/61. d. 3/11/1902. Buried at Whig Hill, Spotsylvania Co.

BEVERLEY, JAMES G.: Enl. 3/1/62 in Co. E. Absent sick on every muster roll from Sept. 1862 to the end of the war.  

BEVERLEY, JOHN G.: Enl. 4/25/61 in Co. E, Present on all rolls except for three brief absences due to sickness. Sought a commission as lieutenant, in vain. POW on South Side Railroad, 4/6/65; paroled at Newport News, 7/1/65.

BOULWARE, GEORGE T.: Only record is of his parole from Co. E at Bowling Green on 5/3/65. Alive in 1904 in Caroline Co.

BRENT, JOSEPH R.A.: b. Louisa Co. Clerk. Enl. 8/12/61 in Co. E. Slightly wded. near Richmond summer 1862. Absent sick from 9/62 until discharged for disability, 4/27/63, age 25.

BROADDUS, JOHN EDWARD: b. 1837 in Caroline Co. Enl. 4/25/61 in Co. E, as Lt. Dropped at 4/26/62 reorganization. Later served in Co. F, 24th Virginia Inf. Deputy sheriff and clerk in Henrico Co. d. 11/29/1907 in Caroline Co.

BULLARD, JOHN C.: Enl. 3/5/62 in Co. E. Hospitalized briefly with gonorrhea, but was present at every muster thru 10/1/64 final roll.

CAMMACK, J.J.: His only record is that he was paroled at Bowling Green, 5/8/65.

CHANCELLOR, GEORGE EDWARDS: b. 1842. Enl. 4/25/61 in Co. E. To Cpl. in 3/62. To Lt. in 1/63. Present thru 10/1/64 final roll. Wounded at Petersburg late in the war. Merchant in Fredericksburg, where he died on 11/12/1887. Buried at Chancellorsville.  

CHANCELLOR, THOMAS FRAZER: b. 1845. Enl. 3/1/62 in Co. E. POW near Gettysburg, 10/11/62; exchanged, 12/20/62. Detailed as courier for Stuart, 12/62 thru 4/63. Died of wounds on 7/15/63. Buried at Chancellorsville.

CHANCELLOR, VESPASIAN: b. 11/22/1838. Enl. 2/1/64 in Co. E. Present thru 1/20/65 final roll. Died 4/28/1908 at 301 Main St. in Fredericksburg. Buried at Chancellorsville.

CHEWNING, CHARLES R.: Enl. 4/1/62 in Co. E. Absent sick on most rolls, sometimes without leave, from Jan. 1863 thru 10/1/64 final roll.

CHEWNING, JAMES S.: Enl. 12/5/61 in Co. E. Absent sick twice and on detail once in 1864. Paroled at Farmville, April 11-21,1865.

CHEWNING, JOSEPH S.: b. Spotsylvania Co. Enl. 4/11/62 in Co. E. After being absent sick, he was discharged for disability in Feb. 1863, age 42. Chewning was 6' 5 1/2 " tall. d. 2/9/1892 in Spotsylvania Co., age 71.  

CHEWNING, MARCUS A.: Enl. 4/25/61 in Co. E. Promoted to Bugler, ca. 4/62. Reduced to Pvt., 12/6/62 and held in arrest during Jan.-April 1863. Absent wded, Jan.-Feb. 1864. Detailed as scout at W.H.F. Lee headquarters, April-Oct. 1864.  No further record.

CHEWNING, WILLIAM H.: Enl. 4/1/62 in Co. E. Absent sick for virtually the entire war, sometimes without leave. He visited several hospitals due to rheumatism, debility and neuralgia. Finally transferred to Co. K, 55th Virginia Infantry on 11/12/64. d. 4/5/1915 in Spotsylvania, age 80.

CHILDS, JAMES F.: Resided near Todd's Tavern. Enl. 9/7/64 in Co. E. Hospitalized in Raleigh, N.C. with scabies in Feb. 1865. No further record.

COX, JOHN THOMAS: b. Westmoreland Co., 1836. Enl. 4/25/61 in Co. E. Detailed as courier for Col., 30th Va. Inf., from 6/28/61 thru at least Feb. 1862. Absent sick, Sept. 1863 thru June 1864. Present then thru 1/20/65 final roll. d. 1910 at DeJarnette, Va.  

CRUTCHFIELD, CHARLES B.: Enl. 4/25/61 in Co. E. Present without fail thru 10/1/64 final roll. Paroled in Va. on 4/15/65. Died 3/1/1916 in Trenton, Ky., age 74.

CRUTCHFIELD, CORBIN: b. 8/14/1838. att. VMI. Enl. 4/25/61 in Co. E as Lt. Promoted to Capt., 8/26/61. Absent sick extensively. "Dropped" – 12/5/62. Merchant in Trenton, Ky., where he died on 1/19/1881.

CRUTCHFIELD, ROBERT: Age 15 in 1860 census. Enl. 2/12/63 in Co. E. Absent wded., May-June 1864. Wded. again by gunshot in left ankle, reached Richmond hospital by 10/4/64.

CURTIS, BENJAMIN F.: b. 9/24/1837. Served in 13th Va. Inf. in 1861. Enl. 3/5/62 in Co. E. Promoted to Cpl. by Sept. 1862 and to Sgt. on 4/15/63. Absent sick (gonorrhea), Nov. 1863 thru Feb. 1864. Present at 10/1/64 final roll. Living in Winchester, Ky., in 1907.  

CUSTER, WILLIAM B.: Federal prison records show this man, of Company E, as captured at Warrenton on 6/17/64 and paroled at Elmira on 3/10/65. There are no records of Confederate origin in his file.

DOUGLAS, WILLIAM WALTER: b. 2/6/1834 in New Kent Co. att. William & Mary. Enl. 8/6/61 by transfer from Co. E, 40th Va. Inf. Promoted to surgeon, CSA, on 2/5/62. Served as such with the 10th Va. Cav. and at Staunton. Physician at Warsaw postwar. d. 7/24/1902.

DUERSON, JOHN J.: b. 6/23/1837. Farmer. Enl. 2/11/62 in Co. E. On detached service, May‑Aug. 1863 and July‑Aug. 1864. POW at Stony Creek, 12/1/64; released from Pt. Lookout, 5/13/65. d. 3/31/1915 in Stafford Co. bur. Berea Baptist Church, Stafford co.

FARISH, ROBERT TOOMBS: b. ca. 1827. Served in 13^th Va. Inf., 1861. Enl. 3/5/62 in Co. E. Courier for Genl. Stuart, Sept. 1862 thru April 1863. No further record. An unofficial source says Farish was killed during the war.

FAULCONER, ABSOLOM W.: Enl. 3/10/62 in Co. E. Illiterate. POW near Fredericksburg, 4/30/63; exchanged from Ft. Delaware, 5/23/63. Absent sick then thru Aug. 1863. No further record.

FAULCONER, EDWIN S.: Enl. 4/1/62 in Co. E. MWIA at Brandy Station and died in Orange on 6/13/63.

FAULCONER, JOHN BENJAMIN: b. 1/28/1844 in Orange Co. Enl. 3/10/62 in Co. E. Transferred to Co. I, 6th Va. Cav., between May and Aug. 1863. d. 1/9/1925.

FAULCONER, JOHN SPENCER: b. Mar. 30, 1843. Enl. 1/13/62 in Co. E. Absent sick on one roll and AWOL on one roll; present otherwise thru 10/1/64 final roll. D. March 20, 1916, bur. Mine Road Baptist Church, Spotsylvania Co.

FINNEY, JOHN T.: Enl. 3/1/62 in Co. E. Detailed on commissary duty, Jan.-April 1863. Absent sick, July-Aug. 1864- Wded. by gunshot in right leg, Feb. 1865; returned to duty, 3/21/65. Paroled at Lynchburg, 4/15/65.

FINNEY, THOMAS W.: Enl. 4/25/61 in Co. E. Present until detailed "as surgeon," Sept. 1863. Remained on that detail until present at 10/1/64 final roll. Physician in Spotsylvania Co. d. 2/18/1892, age "about sixty."

FITZHUGH, NORMAN RICHARD: b. 12/8/1831 in Alexandria. Enl. 4/1/62 in Co. E, as Cpl. Became Capt. and a.a.g. to Genl. Stuart, 6/21/62; promoted to Major, 7/25/62. d. 1914. According to family accounts, Fitzhugh became a prisoner of the Sioux on the plains before the war and a chief adopted him as a son.  He moved to St. Johns Co. Florida in 1876.  In 1909 he was living in Picolata Florida, “very feeble and infirm…” m. Mary Foot Lynde in Utah in 1859.  Fitzhugh died in St. Johns Co. on May 13, 1915.

FOSTER, JAMES A.: Transferred to Co. E on 3/1/63 from 3rd Georgia Inf. Absent sick (syphilis), July-Aug. 1864. AWOL at 10/1/64 final roll. Paroled at Winchester, 4/29/65, age 24.

FOSTER, OREGON DALLAS: b. 2/3/1846. Enl. 7/15/61 in Co. E. Present on every roll thru 10/1/64 final roll. Merchant and postmaster in Fredericksburg. d. 6/26/1914.

FOSTER, THOMAS A.: Enl. 9/16/61 in Co. E. Discharged on 12/1/62. Re-enlisted on 4/1/64. AWOL, July-Aug. 1864. Absent sick at 10/1/64 final roll.

FOSTER, WILLIAM E.: Enl. 6/10/61 in Co. E. Farmer. Present until discharged for being overage, 6/10/64, age 46. d. Jan. 22, 1885.  

FRAZER, JAMES LEWIS: b, 7/16/1833, Enl. 4/25/61 in Co. E, as Lt, Absent on furlough, Nov-Dec. 1861. Resigned on 2/17/62 and offered a substitute, saying that his wife and three children needed him. d. 4/11/1894 in Spotsylvania C.H. bur. at Berea Church there.

GAYLE, JOSIAH PITT: b. 4/3/1840. Farmer. Enl. 4/25/61 in Co. E, as Sgt. Promoted to Lt., 3/1/62. Dropped at 4/26/62 reorganization of the regiment. Later served with Mosby. d. 1/18/1905 in Spotsylvania. bur. Fredericksburg Masonic Cemetery.

GAYLE, THOMAS BENTON: b. 11/8/1840. Enl. 4/25/61 in Co. E. Present thru Dec. 1861, then no further official record. It is said that Gayle left service due to problems with eyesight and typhoid, and later joined Mosby. d. 11/8/1928 in King George Co.

GOODWIN, LITTLETON, JR.: Transferred to Co. E on 11/5/61 from the Fredericksburg Arty. Detailed as courier for Genl Stuart, Jan. 1863 thru March 1864. Absent sick at 10/1/64 final roll. Died in the Soldiers' Home at Richmond 1/13/1911.

GOODWIN, THOMAS E.: Enl. 4/25/61 in Co. E. Detailed as Commissary Clerk, Jan. 1862 thru April 1863. Appointed Commissary Sgt., 5/1/63, and was absent from the company on that duty thru 10/1/64 final roll.

GOODWIN, WILLIAM MARY BYRD: b. 1823. Enl. 3/1/62 in Co. E. AWOL from March 1863 thru 10/1/64 final roll. Hospitalized in Richmond in Feb. 1865. No further record. Murdered by his son-in-law on 9/14/1889.

GRADY, WILLIAM RICHARD: age 24 in 1860 census. Enl. 4/25/61 in Co. E. Detailed as wagon driver at brigade HQ, Nov. 1862 thru 10/1/64 final roll. POW at Anderson Station, Va., 7/23/62; exchanged from Old Capitol Prison, 8/5/62. POW at Weldon R.R., 10/11/64; exchanged on 2/10/65. Died of tuberculosis in 1865. bur. in Chancellor Cemetery, Chancellorsville.

GRAVES, BENJAMIN F.: Enl. 4/25/61 in Co. E. Present on every record until absent on furlough, Jan.-Feb. 1865.

GRAYSON, ROBERT O.: Enl. 3/5/62 in Co. E, then no further record at all.

GREEN, WILLIAM E.: Descendants of Green assert that he was a member of Company E, 9^th Va. Cav., and his obituary makes the same claim.  He has no official service record.  Green died in D.C. on Dec. 14, 1909, age 86.  Since he was older than 35 through most of the war, he might have been a late-war conscript when the age brackets were raised.

HART, CUDLIP: Enl. 9/8/61 in Co. E. Present on every record thru 10/1/64 final roll. Beginning in Nov. 1862, Hart served as a wagon driver. d. March 1888 of pneumonia.
